| The current Pembrokeshire flag: Not very old or very stylish. |
AS momentum gathers pace behind the campaign to create a Pembrokeshire Day, we at pembrokeshiretv.com wondered what other essentials were necessary to ensure our pride in this little corner of the world did not go un-noticed.
Numerous possibilities, most involving Pembrokeshire corgis, were tossed, both back and forth, around the office only to be rejected as impractical, immoral or simply offensive until, in a final desperate bid, one further suggestion was run up the flagpole to see if anyone saluted. And salute it we did.
It seems that anyone who’s anyone has a flag these days: Nations have them; pirates have them; beaches have them; even good old convenience has one. You can have a white flag, a red flag or a chequered flag. Something called Green Flag will even come and fix your car should it stutter to a halt upon the highways and byways of the nation. Everybody has a flag. So why don’t we?
Here at pembrokeshiretv.com, we realise that there may well be some of you out there who, at this very moment in time, are screaming “Oh, but we do have a flag. It’s that blue and yellow one with the red and white thingy in the middle”. Well, this maybe true. But a blue and yellow one with a red and white thingy in the middle? What’s that all about?
The current flag, emblazoned on the front of one local newspaper, is neither old nor particularly stylish. In fact, it is a late 1980s creation of that same newspaper and as far as we at pembrokeshiretv.com are concerned, unique in that only one of it exists. And that one is now rather dog-eared, moth-eaten and looking out of sorts.

| The Jolly Roger: Even illiterate pirates managed to come up with a cool flag. | Now we would wish to make it clear that we are certainly not attempting to criticise that stately periodical for instigating the idea of a county flag. Indeed, the very campaign we are currently pursuing is, in part, to honour the venerable old lady of Pembrokeshire and her efforts to promote this land, but blue and yellow with a red and white thingy? Are they the colours that leap into one’s mind, when, trapped traffic-bound amid the smogs of London or frying on a crowded Costa Bravan beach, thoughts turn to Wales and home?
If, like us, you answer that question firmly in the negative, then it may be time you joined the campaign and enrolled your youngsters in a competition to become part of this county’s history.
We at pembrokeshiretv.com intend to contact every school, from St Dogmaels to Saundersfoot and from Angle to Eglwyswrw, so the county’s kids can join in the fun and use their skills and knowledge of the area to create the one, true Flag of Pembrokeshire.
However, don’t worry if your children’s school decides not to take part, youngsters can enter directly by post or email and we are even willing to accept designs from older residents provided they are of a sufficiently high standard.
We want to create a flag that represents Pembrokeshire to one and all, old and young, residents and tourists: Something that once in existence will be forever linked to this wonderful part of the world.
So what are you waiting for ? Get outside, breathe in a deep lungful of this fine Pembrokeshire air, and get designing.
STOP PRESS: Breaking news has reached the pembrokeshiretv.com newsroom that there is the possibility that an older flag in honour of Pembrokeshire exists, or at least, existed. We believe that this flag may have been linked to the Royal household and some regal goings-on at Pembroke. Anyone with any information is asked to contact me via the email address below.
