Brother Teilo is one of Caldey's Cistercian order
TENBY’S new Tamar Class lifeboat was launched for its second successful rescue yesterday, when the volunteer crew came to the aid of a fallen monk on Caldey Island.

The crew received the call-out at 11.38 on Tuesday morning. Yesterday’s rough seas meant that that the island boat had stopped running, the lifeboat was the only possible way to convey 75-year-old Brother Teilo to the mainland.

The Cistercian monk had fallen down a flight of 15 steps and had a suspected broken arm. The lifeboat ferried him to an awaiting ambulance on Tenby Pier, which took the injured monk straight to Withybush Hospital.

Brother Teilo was found to have dislocated his shoulder, he was kept overnight and is expected to return to the island today.

Yesterday's was the first official Tamar rescue
This was the Tamar’s first official on-service rescue, as it has now replaced Tenby’s old Tyne class lifeboat.

Tenby Lifeboat crew estimate that, over the last 20 years, they have rescued approximately 12 monks from Caldey - all of whom belong to the austere Cistercian, or Trappist, order.

Cistercians observe a rule of silence between the hours of 7pm to 7am, make vows of poverty, chastity and obedience and follow a demanding timetable of prayer, study and work, beginning at 3am every day.

Caldey Island is a popular tourist day trip destination between the months of April and October, and runs a successful retreat during the same period.
