| Jason Crowther took first prize in the Gloucester cheese rolling competition | LANDSHIPPING'S Jason Crowther sure likes his cheese rolls. The Pembrokeshire man seized victory in a nationwide cheese rolling competition for the second year running last Sunday.
Jason, 24, took part in the annual cheese rolling event at Cooper’s Hill in Gloucestershire. Competitors raced down a steep hill to retrieve a rolling round of double Gloucester.
With a crowd of around 3000 watching, and a team of rugby players ready to catch those who couldn't stop running at the end of the hill, Jason was one of dozens who braved the wet and muddy conditions to slip, slide and tumble down the 1:2 hill after the runaway dairy product.
In his competition Jason was first to reach the bottom of the hill and took home the cheese. Second or third place would have earned him a small cash prize.
“The slope has a gradient that is in places 1:2 and in others 1:1,” said the event’s organisers.
“Its surface is very rough and uneven and it is almost impossible to remain on foot for the descent. Injuries incurred are usually minor and competitors (particularly the successful ones) enter again year after year.”
The competition is thought to be hundreds of years old, and people come from all over the world to take part. Our Pembrokeshire boy held his own among Austrians, Norwegians, Americans and Swedes.
"I have no real tactic I just ran and hoped for the best,“ said Jason. “I'm going to take my cheese to the pub and have a party."
